📋 THE BIG BOARD

The full data behind Fintech Friday. Every number we tracked this week, organized the same way as the email: what capital costs, where it moved, what it is powering, who's checking AI's math, what crypto did, and the hardware. Levels as of Friday morning, October 16, 2026. Closes will differ slightly.

💵 COST OF CAPITAL

Rates whipsawed this week: up on hot inflation, then back down on a calmer Fed. Here is the full picture.

Why rates whipsawed

On Wednesday, inflation came in hot, and the 10-year Treasury hit 5.30%. By Friday it was back near 5.10%, after Fed Chair Kevin Warsh said the economy was on track.

The 10-year sets the price of most loans. When it rises, mortgages and business loans cost more. Mortgages held at 7.40%. The odds of an October rate hike went from about 50% on Wednesday to about 14% on Friday.

Abroad, bond rates eased and stocks took the hit. UK 30-year rates fell to 5.85% from last week's 28-year high. Japan's Nikkei fell 4.9% on Thursday, and Korea's KOSPI fell 7.6% the same day with a trading halt.

Money got cheaper by Friday. It's still expensive.

💸 MONEY MOVES

Every capital move we tracked this week, biggest first, grouped by where the company is based. Every deal name links to its source.

The theme: the big checks went to real revenue

The biggest check was a buyout: Penske's founders and Mitsui are taking Penske Automotive private in a $16.3 billion deal, including debt. Proofpoint is buying Varonis, a data security company, for $6.3 billion in cash. Bumble is going private for $1.3 billion. IonQ, a quantum computing company, is buying Elisity for up to $1.3 billion in stock.

The biggest raise was Ramp, the corporate card company: $1.85 billion at a $60 billion value. AI money kept coming too: TypeSafe raised $870 million and Modal raised $750 million.

When money costs more, the biggest checks go to companies with real revenue.

⚡ ENERGY & COMMODITIES

Brent, the global oil price, held above $100, and diesel is the fuel to watch. The full price sheet, the week's power deals for AI, and what is moving in the East.

Why diesel matters

WTI, the US oil price, rose about 6% to around $98. Brent sat near $105.

Diesel fuels the trucks, trains and farm equipment behind almost every price. It rose 5¢ to $6.33 a gallon, and the IEA says the shortage lasts into the second half of 2027.

The shipping trade cooled off. Supertanker rates slipped from their record highs, and BWET, the fund that bets on those rates, fell 10% in one day.

Diesel is the price behind every other price.

🔌 Power for AI

  • Kairos Power raised $643 million, $275 million of it from the Department of Energy, to build its reactor in Tennessee.

  • Skeleton Technologies raised $100M+, led by Siemens, for supercapacitors that steady power for AI data centers.

  • Gartner warned that over 80% of "neoclouds," the companies renting out AI chips and power, may not survive on their own by 2030.

🌏 The East

🧮 CHECKING THE MATH

The full story behind the main thread: how oil made money expensive, who paid first, and the two sides of the AI token debate.

The chain

Brent sits around $105, and the IEA says the diesel shortage lasts into the second half of 2027. Fuel feeds into almost every price. September consumer prices rose 3.7%, and producer prices jumped 1.3% in one month. The 10-year Treasury hit 5.30%, and October hike odds briefly touched 50%.

Who paid first

The bets built on borrowed money. CoreWeave, which rents out AI chips and owes about $50 billion, fell 15.5% on Oct 14. Investors now pay a record price to insure its debt. The same day, Gartner warned that more than $3.5 trillion of AI infrastructure could face write-downs by 2030.

Oct 15. Chip rental prices held up

The token debate

Kuppy says AI tokens are a commodity and the "token factories" are overbuilt: about $2 trillion spent, with newer chips making older ones obsolete. The a16z chart built on Citadel Securities data shows the other side: token prices fell, but chip rental prices held up, because cheaper AI gets used more. Both can be true at once.

What to watch

Tesla reports Oct 21. The Fed meets Oct 27 and 28. MSCI's index list lands Nov 11. And oil decides how expensive money stays.

Oil sets the price of money. The price of money sets the price of everything else.

₿ CRYPTO CORNER

Prices, the outflows, MSCI's Strategy rule, and the week's regulation, in one place. Prices are live quotes from Friday morning, Oct 16.

Prices held. The money left.

Bitcoin barely moved this week, down about 1% to around $82,300.

Underneath, investors pulled about $535 million out of Bitcoin funds and $635 million out of Ether funds this month. After the inflation report, nearly $1 billion in borrowed bets was wiped out in one day.

Then MSCI approved rules that could drop Strategy, the biggest company holding Bitcoin, from its stock indexes. Funds that track those indexes would have to sell. JPMorgan estimates that could force about $2.8 billion of selling. In Washington, the White House's top crypto adviser, Patrick Witt, stepped away for military leave, and the CLARITY Act hit a setback in the Senate.

Prices didn't crash. Confidence did.
